So the Journey Goes ****
On their third record, Autorickshaw's multicultural sound is wrought with more tension than ever before. Though anchored in Indian classical music, Autorickshaw are renowned for exploring and integrating jazz, funk, folk and other styles. A recent trip to India left frontwoman Suba Sankaran self-conscious about her Indo-Canadian identity, and So the Journey Goes explores the theme of personal discovery. It's an edgy amalgam of ragas and genre-bending instrumentation – on the title track, a drum 'n' bass beat precedes a veritable rap by Sankaran, while Rich Brown's funky bass fuses with Ed Hanley's tablas on a surprising cover of “Bird on a Wire.” The horns and intense pop of “Aaj Ki Raat” are bursting with cheerfulness, but the heady electro-jazz of “Heavy Traffic” is a dark highlight. This is Autorickshaw's finest album yet.
