Tabla Classes

Interested in tabla? Be sure to visit Ed's website: www.ed-hanley.com

Ed Hanley offers private lessons out of his studio in downtown Toronto.

Lessons are available for all levels, from absolute beginner to advanced, and include technique (drumming technique and accompanying spoken drum language), repertoire, theory and performance.

Ed has studied tabla with Ritesh Das (Toronto Tabla Ensemble), Swapan Chaudhuri, Anindo Chatterjee and Subhajyoti Guha, as well as with mrdangists Trichy Sankaran and Karaikudi Mani (translating mrdangam repertoire onto tabla).

Students must provide their own tabla drums, although sets are available if you just want to try it out for the first time.

Buying tabla:
Tabla drums are available in Toronto at a number of stores, and it is strongly recommended that prospective students contact Ed before purchasing drums. He will meet you at the store, and pick out a quality set within your budget.

Tabla Repair: Image
Ed offers tabla repair classes including tuning, pulling (tightening) and reheading. Ed apprenticed at Mrdangam tabla shop in Kolkata, where he learned tabla repair techniques.
