August 31st: On the Subject of Rain PDF Print E-mail

Ireland has apparently had a bad time this Summer. The season itself seems to have thrown in the towel and given up trying to warm the Emerald Isle, pitched its tent in the Mediterranean, and fallen asleep in the shade with a bottle of wine. In the place of Sun, since arriving here we have experienced an entirely different but equally powerful phenomenon called (yes, you guessed it) Rain.

But this is not the North-American Rain that we are used to (i.e. all the way On and all the way Off). This is a kaleidoscope of precipitation, a spectrum of wetness, a smorgasbord of moisture. Light Misting transforms to Heavy Rain back to Moderate Drizzle and then ramps up to Serious Showers. There may be a Sunny Break every now and again, but these are infrequent and insincere. They only serve to allow the Rain a chance to have a wee tea-break before returning to its real work: Down-pouring on us. This is the joyous variety of Irish Rain that has followed Autorickshaw since leaving London on August 20th.

Luckily we are hearty Canadians, used to inclement weather (Ok, at least I am, being from Montreal, not Toronto). We don't complain. We get the sniffles, our clothes are constantly soaked, our hair curls: we keep on trucking. No problem. Yes.
Right.
Sure.

Tomorrow, we return to London and then we're off to Prague.
They are announcing showers in both cities for the rest of the week.
