Toronto's two-time Juno-nominated Indo-jazz funk fusion ensemble Autorickshaw is capping off its 2008 Toronto concert series September 25th at the Lula Lounge.  The last of its three collaborative concerts – each featuring a different special guest – will feature noted Brazlian/jazz composer, pianist and accordion player Gordon Sheard.

Sheard has enjoyed a multi-faceted three-decade career that includes touring with Manteca, The Montuno Police, and Montreal bassist Alain Caron's Le Band.  He has done session work for Liona Boyd, Rita McNeil and countless others, and played on the 1992 hit record My Temptation by ex Sway member Vivienne Williams.  His production credits include albums by Carol Welsman, Yvette Tollar and Eliana Cuevas.  In addition, Sheard is a prolific composer, having recorded three solo albums – 2006's Crucible, 1998's Martini Lounge (Avalon) and 1997's Romance of Rio (Avalon) – and contributed to recordings by Phil Dwyer, Rick Shadrach Lazar and The Montuno Police, and Manteca.

Sheard's composing talents will take centre stage at the Lula show, which marks the debut of three of his new works, two of which – "11/8" and "Bringer of Pleasure" - were written especially for the concert. The third is 'The Trouble With Hari', a piece commissioned by Autorickshaw with the assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts.  The cleverly-named composition combines the Brazilian 'Baiao' rhythm with melodic elements from the 'Hari Kambhoji' raga.

Autorickshaw's concert series finale bookends a year that has seen the band build steadily on the success of its 2007 recording, So the Journey Goes.  The ensemble entered 2008 with an Ontario Independent Music Award and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for the record.   It was also named one of the Top Five Jazz Acts of 2007 by Toronto Life.  The group then landed a Juno nomination for World Music Album of the Year, performed at JunoFest in Calgary, and earned Grand Prize in the world category of the John Lennon Songwriting competition.

Autorickshaw will finish of the year with a tour of BC and a pair of Toronto concerts with the Hannaford Street Silver Band.  The group will kick off '09 with a series of Ontario shows with the Penderecki String Quartet.
